What policy do I need for classic scooter insurance?
There are three main types of policies to choose from: third party only, third party, fire and theft, and fully comprehensive cover. We can also cover your classic scooter and vintage scooters on a laid-up policy.
Third party only
This is the minimum level of cover required to legally ride your classic scooter on public roads. If you’re involved in an at-fault accident, this will cover the cost of any damage or injury sustained to a third party, their property and their vehicle.
Third party, fire and theft
Third party, fire and theft includes everything in a third party insurance policy, but your bike is also covered against fire and theft.
Fully comprehensive cover
Fully comprehensive insurance includes everything in the above two tiers, plus it also covers the cost of damage to your motorcycle.
Laid-up cover
If you’re a collector and own multiple classic or vintage bikes that are locked up safe for the majority of the year, or you tend to only take your bike out when the weather’s sunny, our laid-up insurance can help protect against theft and fire when your bike isn’t in use.
Specialist insurance policies for vintage scooters
If you own a scooter that’s over 30 years of age, you might find that a classic scooter insurance policy doesn’t completely fit your needs. This is because it might not take into account the true value of your bike and other aspects like replacement parts being harder to source.
We offer specialist insurance for vintage scooters that takes all of this into account and more. Plus, we can offer agreed value cover for your scooter, meaning we agree on an amount you’ll be paid out in the event of a total loss, giving you peace of mind that you’ll be paid out closer to the bike’s worth.
How much is classic scooter insurance?
The cost of your classic scooter insurance depends on a number of factors, including your riding history, any no claims bonus (NCB) you’ve built up, and how you use your bike.
That being said, many policies for classic scooters tend to be more affordable than the cost of standard scooter insurance when you get a quote with us. This is because we know that many classic bike owners are enthusiasts who will take good care of their scooters.
How to get more affordable classic scooter insurance
There are a number of ways you can reduce the cost of your cover. Here’s what we find helps our clients secure more affordable insurance:
- Join an owner’s club or forum: this tells us you’re an enthusiast and we can provide a discount of up to 15% on your cover
- Get a limited mileage policy: if you ride for less than 7,500 miles in a year, let us know and we can put you on a low mileage policy to help you save money
- Take out multi-bike cover: if you need to insure multiple bikes, we can provide discounted cover
- Up your security: use insurance-approved security for your scooter so it’s less likely to be stolen as this can help lower your premium
Classic scooter insurance for young and new riders
A classic 125cc scooter is an excellent option for new and young riders who have just passed their CBT. If you’re looking to get on the road at 17, give us a call for a quote. We can also cover 16-year-old AM licence holders who want to ride a classic 50cc bike – so long as you have a guarantor.
Tailored classic and vintage scooter insurance
We understand that no two scooters are the same, especially when it comes to a cherished classic or vintage model. Whether you own a classic Chinese scooter, Vespa or Lambretta, we can find you cover that meets your needs and budget. We can even cover retro scooters so you don’t have to choose between style and technology.
And that’s not all; if you’ve modified your classic bike to suit your style, to provide extra power, or to restore it to its original beauty, we can help. We’re able to cover classic and vintage scooters during the restoration process too.
Extra benefits for classic scooter insurance
We offer a number of comprehensive protection packages, which are a more affordable way of getting a number of optional extras such as helmets and leathers cover, legal cover, and breakdown cover.
We also offer a number of optional extras which you can add to your insurance policy. This allows you to tailor cover to meet your needs. You can pick and choose from our full range of extras:
- Helmets and leathers cover
- Breakdown cover
- Licence defence
- Keycare
- Excess protect
- Gadget cover
- Travel insurance
Classic scooter insurance FAQs
How old does a scooter have to be to get classic insurance?
The age a scooter has to be before it’s deemed a “classic” is the source of much debate, and you might find that the definition differs between insurance companies. As a general rule, we deem bikes over 15 years old to be classics, and scooters over 30 years old to be vintage.
That being said, if you have a particularly rare model that’s younger than this, or one that’s considered a “cult classic”, we can sometimes put your bike on a classic scooter insurance policy even if it doesn’t fit the above definition.
How does classic scooter insurance differ from standard cover?
There are several ways classic scooter insurance differs from standard cover. For a start, insurance for older vehicles is usually more affordable than for more modern bikes. This is because owners with classic models are generally seen as less of a risk to insurers and are known to treat their bikes well.
The cover might also differ too. For instance, many classic models aren’t insured for their actual worth and so, in the event that they are damaged or written off, you’re paid out a much lower value than you might think. With classic scooters, you can often take out agreed value cover, which will allow you to reach an agreement with your insurer on how much you would be paid out if your bike was totalled.
